The International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW) is issuing a call for papers for presentation at the virtual conference in September 2021 entitled Addressing food insecurity in Africa: strategies for ensuring child-sensitive social protection.

Recognized as a multifaceted challenge, food security is high on the political and socio-economic agendas of many countries. The conference seeks to explore a wealth of issues on child-sensitive social protection in the context of efforts aimed at fighting food insecurity in Africa and at highlighting different national perspectives and policy responses. The effective targeting of these responses to ensure that they meet the needs of all, especially the most vulnerable – and children in particular – remains a challenge. Child-sensitive social protection requires, among other actions, specific programme design and interventions, accessing links between poverty and malnutrition, emphasis on the gendered nature of poverty as well as on the size and frequency of cash transfers.

Aligning the preparation of the conference with research or policy-practice work done by the invited speakers/scholars/practitioners, the ICSW seeks to facilitate a more productive and focused debate on existing national evidence and proposed policy measures. The conference presentations will be done on the basis of written submissions.

A brief summary of the paper (200-300 words) should be submitted in English on or before April 30, 2021.

Submissions, in the form of full papers (approximately 4,500 words) are due on August 31, 2021.

The abstracts, as well as the full papers, should be sent to the ICSW reviewing committee at the following addresses:
